Put AI to work on your contract portfolio

Three jobs AI does on contracts today: it fills the register from the document you already have, checks a contract against your own best practice, and answers questions across the portfolio. All of it in beta, and all of it with you checking the output.

The contract list in .legal with the register filled in: each contract's template, business areas, manager, the parties on either side, its end date and its status

AI on contracts Meridian's contract archive became something Peter can put a question to

Peter Lund is legal counsel at Meridian Nordic, an energy group whose archive holds agreements with around 1,200 suppliers, DPAs and NDAs included. A good share of them arrived as signed PDFs from three entities, and the register only ever got filled in when somebody had a quiet afternoon. Now the document goes in and the fields come back filled, ready for Peter to correct. The contracts he inherited get read against Meridian's own best practice, and when someone asks where the notice periods sit, he asks the portfolio instead of searching it.

  • Getting a signed contract into the register is a reviewing job now, not a typing job.
  • A scan says, requirement by requirement, where a contract falls short of Meridian's own standard.
  • Questions across the whole portfolio come back with the passage they rest on, in the document.
  • .legal AI is in beta, and every output is built so Peter can check it.

  • Reviewing, not typing

Upload a contract you already have and the fields come back filled. You correct what the AI got wrong before the record is created.

  • Your standard, not ours

The quality scan measures a document against the best-practice template you supply, requirement by requirement.

  • Answers you can check

Answers from the assistant link to the source document and highlight the passage they rest on.

  • A ceiling you set

AI stays locked until you set a monthly spending limit, and pauses by itself when the limit is reached.

A closed document being read rather than made, with an open frame of empty record fields beside it and nothing anywhere that writes

AI on contracts AI here doesn't write contracts. It reads them.

Contract management in .legal is the life of a contract after it is signed, and the AI works to the same boundary. It doesn't draft, negotiate or sign anything, and everything on this page happens to contracts that already exist.

  • A register is only worth what is in it, and typing metadata off a PDF is what stops one from ever being finished.
  • Reading a whole portfolio against your own standard is the job nobody has time for, and the one that surfaces at audit.
  • The answer to where your liability wording drifts sits inside the documents, not in the fields.
The create-contract dialogue in .legal on AI-assisted creation, with the values extracted from an uploaded PDF shown for checking — name, description, contract type, dates, status, a custom field and an annual value — above a note that .legal AI can make mistakes

AI on contracts From a signed PDF to a filled-in contract record

Upload the contract you already have, pick the template it belongs to, and the AI extracts the data into that template's fields.

  • The template comes first, because it decides which fields the AI is extracting into.
  • Name, type, business areas, dates, currency, amounts, payment terms and parties, plus your own custom fields. Parties are created automatically, or matched to an existing party on registration number or name.
  • Nothing reaches the contract until you have been through a review step and corrected what it got wrong. One honest limit from us: it cannot populate access conditions.
An AI Quality Scan result in .legal, counting the requirements fulfilled, partially fulfilled and missing, with a summary above two requirements expanded to show the quote from the document, the quote from the comparison template and a recommendation

AI on contracts Check a contract against your own best practice

The scan compares one document against a comparison template you supply, requirement by requirement. Your standard is the yardstick, not ours and not a regulator's.

  • Every requirement comes back as Fulfilled, Partially fulfilled or Missing.
  • Each result carries the quote from your template, the corresponding text from the document and a recommendation for improvement.
  • It isn't contract-only. The same scan runs on policies, processing activities, assets and incident logs.
A question put to ComplyHans about contracts with long termination periods, answered with a ranked list of contracts, each one linked, carrying its notice period and its renewal terms, and a note that further matches may exist

AI on contracts Ask one question across the whole portfolio

ComplyHans is a chat panel that answers from the content already in the platform. It is built for the question that spans a hundred contracts, not the one you have open.

  • Narrow the data basis first, by tag, business area or specific contracts, so a large portfolio still gives you a relevant answer.
  • Answers link straight to the source document and highlight the relevant section, so a lawyer can check the claim rather than take it on trust.
  • Bring in a document you have been sent, compare it against what is already in the platform, and pick the conversation up again days later.
AI administration in .legal, with the monthly spending limit beside the data facts for .legal AI, and the month's consumption broken down per AI feature

AI on contracts You switch it on, and you set the ceiling

AI is the one part of the platform settled by consumption, so it comes with a control most people find stricter than they expected.

  • An administrator activates the AI features and accepts the AI terms. Until a monthly spending limit has been set, the AI features stay locked.
  • Reach the limit and they pause automatically, until the month resets or you raise the limit. You are notified before that happens.
  • Consumption is visible per AI feature, AI can be switched off again entirely, and it can be switched off for a single user through their role.

AI on contracts In beta, and what happens to your data

.legal AI is in beta. It is released, it is usable, and we are still testing it and making it better while customers use it, which is why every output on this page is built to be checked. On data there are four things to say, and nothing beyond them.

  • We chose a European AI provider, so your data is not sent to the USA.
  • Your data and the questions you ask are not used to train the model, and no data is stored at the AI provider.
  • The AI functions can always be switched off again, and when they are, they stop working.

Features for AI on contracts

AI-assisted contract creation

Upload an existing contract, choose the template, and name, type, business areas, dates, currency, amounts, payment terms and parties are extracted into its fields. Nothing is saved until you have been through the review step. Requires the AI Features add-on, switched on by an administrator.

Field descriptions the AI reads

The description you write on a custom field tells the AI what belongs in it, so a well-described template extracts better than a bare one. Parties are created automatically, or matched to an existing party on registration number or name.

AI Quality Scan

Compare a document against a best-practice template of your own and get Fulfilled, Partially fulfilled or Missing per requirement, each with the quote from your template, the matching text from the document and a suggested improvement.

Ask ComplyHans across the portfolio

Ask in plain language across your contracts and the documents in the platform, rather than one contract at a time. Answers link to the source document and highlight the section they come from.

Narrow what it looks at

Filter the assistant's data basis by tag, business area or specific contracts before you ask, so answers stay relevant on a large portfolio.

A monthly spending limit

AI features stay locked until an administrator sets a limit, pause automatically when it is reached until the month resets or you raise it, and consumption is visible per AI feature along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions about AI on contracts

Does .legal draft contracts for us?

No, and that has not changed because there is AI in the platform. Contract management in .legal is the life of a contract after it is signed, so drafting, negotiation and e-signing are deliberately not part of it. What the AI does is work on contracts that already exist: it gets one into the register from the document, checks a document against a standard you supply, and answers questions about what is already there.

Running due diligence before the contract is signed

Is the AI in beta?

Yes, and we would rather put that on the page than in a footnote. .legal AI is released and usable, and we are still testing it and making it better while customers use it. It is also why every output is built to be checked: the scan quotes the passage it judged, the assistant links to the document behind its answer, and contract creation asks you to review the extracted values before anything is saved. AI can make mistakes, so important information should be verified.

What does the quality scan actually measure against?

The best-practice template you chose, not a law and not a framework. You pick a comparison template, the AI reads the document against it requirement by requirement, and each requirement comes back as Fulfilled, Partially fulfilled or Missing, with the reference quote from your template, the corresponding text from the document and a recommendation for improvement. The standard is yours. The scan is advisory, it does not write anything back into the document, and in our own words it is a helpful starting point rather than a definitive assessment.

Where does our data go?

We chose a European AI provider, so your data is not sent to the USA. Your data and the questions you ask are not used to train the model. No data is stored at the AI provider. And the AI functions can always be switched off again, at which point they stop working.

Can AI consumption run away with us?

That is what the spending limit is for, and it is stricter than most people expect. An administrator activates the AI features and accepts the AI terms, and nothing works until a monthly spending limit has been set, so locked is the starting state. When you reach the limit, the AI features pause automatically until the month resets or you raise the limit, and you are notified before that happens. You can follow consumption per AI feature along the way, and you are only charged for what you actually use. The commercial side is worth taking on a demo.

Does the AI read the obligations out of our contracts?

No, and the answer is deliberately the same one we give on our obligations page. You decide what each contract obliges you to do and register it yourself. The AI fills the contract's metadata fields when you upload the document, but it does not derive duties, deadlines or judgement calls from the text, and nothing starts a clock on your behalf.

Registering the duties inside the contract

Can a colleague get an answer built on a contract they are not allowed to see?

No. The assistant only looks at the documentation the individual user has access to, so if you can open two contracts out of hundreds, those two are what it can answer from. Access to the contract is still what controls confidentiality in .legal, and AI can also be switched off for a single user through their role, in which case the AI functions disappear everywhere they normally appear.

What is the assistant actually good at, and what is it not?

Contracts and the documents in the platform. That is where version one is strongest, and we would rather set that expectation than let you discover it. It can answer general compliance questions too, but that is not its strongest area, and it is not the place to ask about your frameworks or your controls. It also answers partly from general compliance knowledge that is not tied to a document you own, so an answer is not automatically grounded in your own material, which is exactly why it shows you the source.

Can we scan the whole archive in one go?

No, and it is better to know that now. The quality scan is started by hand, one document at a time, from the AI icon in the document overview or the document's own menu. There is no bulk scan and no scheduled scan, and there is no batch upload of documents either, so an old archive comes in the way it always has. A scan can be re-run against a different version of the same document when it changes.
